Visiting us

If you are considering bringing a school group to Chester, then there is no better way than to visit us through our partners at the Grosvenor Museum. Schools find that a visit to the museum combined with a Roman soldier patrol is an ideal way to start the topic or reinforce the teaching that has already gone on. Groups arriving are met at the museum by a Roman soldier in full armour (authentic) and brought to attention in the style of a sergeant major who welcomes them to 25 years of service in the legions. They are then each given a set of armour to wear (lightweight plastic). Our new recruits are then given an insight into the life of a Roman soldier and the rigours he must endure in the British climate. They swear an oath to the emperor before heading out on patrol to various Roman remains including Chester’s own amphitheatre.

An ideal day at the museum would include time in the museum’s Roman galleries complete with worksheets, a handling session with one of our education officers, a free lunch room facility, and Roman soldier patrol with a suit of armour for each pupil.*

For full details and bookings of this service Please contact Lorna, Museum Visits Coordinator on 01244 402017.

*armour is provided as a courtesy to school groups and is the property of Roman Tours Ltd. Armour is occasionally not available due to repairs or late arrival of groups

Visiting Your School

Many schools today find that a Roman visiting their school can be a very affordable way to add first hand experience to the Roman topic, be it at primary or secondary education level.

This is the biggest growth area of our business due to the cost of coach travel and difficulties associated with external visits for schools. We have developed this service in line with the curriculum and are available throughout the U.K. We visit schools, dressed in full replica armour and equipment. All our equipment is an exact copy of what has been found through archaeology investigation. We engage pupils through curriculum-relevant role play, character acting, questioning and activities, providing a unique educational experience around the life of the soldier, impact on British culture, Roman society, medicine, military training and drill, towns, roads, sanitation, ladies and make up, and lifestyles.

To compensate for the lack of historical remains, we bring along various replica artifacts such as a full marching pack, which includes the soldier's rations, underwear, fire lighting kit, money, spare clothes, strigil, cooking pots, tools, wine and water, spices etc etc. We also have a second set of armour for students to try, and even ladies make-up and sponge for his…. Well you’ll find out.

We have a considerable amount of information that can be put over in a visit, so the longer our sessions with each class the better. Each visit is individually tailored to suit the teacher's planning on the subject.

Our visits are always interactive i.e. dressing pupil in armor, marching and formation practice including the tortoise (testudo), a formation that needs testing by the teachers throwing our (Safe) missiles and paper balls. this illustrates how effective teamwork can be and why it was so important to life in the Roman army.

Outreach sessions are ideal for schools as they are easily tailored to match the teacher’s requirements. They are a fun and unique educational experience for both the pupils and the staff. We Provide Full and half day presentations.  For further information please call our dedicated schools line.  Tel 01978 761264 open up till 7.30pm or
